Belgium held Bulgaria to 2:2 draw in Euro 2004 qualifier match on June 7. A victory for Bulgaria over Belgium at the National Stadium Vassil Levski would have guaranteed the country a visa for the European Championship in Portugal, but even now Bulgaria are top of Group Eight.

Prior to the match the country was ahead of Croatia (7 points) and Belgium (6) 10 points from four matches.

Dimitar Berbatov scored a goal for Bulgaria (52nd minute), followed by Svetoslav Todorov's penalty goal (71 minute). Stiliyan Petrov scored a goal for the team of Belgium (31st minute).

Before the match both teams faced selection problems. Bulgarian defender Kishishev quitted the national football team and will miss the match against Belgium, while VfB Stuttgart playmaker Krasimir Balakov retired last month.

Plamen Markov announced the Bulgarian team line-up forty five minutes before the start of the match: Zdravkov, Stankov, Stoyanov, Kirilov, Petkov, Borimirov, Petrov (captain), Hristov, Dimitrov, Berbatov and Petrov.

Belgian coach Aime Antheunis was forced to select more experienced players after the defeat the team suffered (2-0) to Bulgaria in Brussels last September.

A day earlier Bulgarian junior football team won a victory of 2:1 over Belgium's team in a European Championship qualifier match.
