At least 50 civilians are reported dead after an air raid on a Baghdad market. People scrabbling through rubble to reach the dead and injured amid the wreckage in the Shula residential area of the city, TV pictures showed.
The report came as coalition forces renewed night-time bombing across the Iraqi capital.
Foreign agencies' correspondents in Baghdad said there was no clear information yet on what may have caused the destruction of the market.
Arabic broadcasters in Qatar and Abu Dhabi each said more than 50 people were dead.
Abu Dhabi television said the devastation may have been caused by a US cruise missile.
US officials at the Central Command headquarters in Qatar suggested that the attack might have been caused by a misfired Iraqi missile, BBC reported.
