Due to the spike in Covid-19 morbidity in the country, over 90% of hospital beds for coronavirus patients are already occupied, said Dr. Ivan Kolchakov, an anesthesiologist and resuscitator at Sofiamed University Hospital.

"In our hospital, as practically in all big Sofia hospitals, and in the whole country I see the growing discrepancy between the patients we admit and those we discharge, which has led to a lack of beds and over 90% are already occupied. For someone to be admitted - another has to be discharged healthy or after a death case," Dr Kolchakov told Nova TV.

"Every hour we feed information to the regional health inspectorate and every available bed is occupied right away. We have 150 beds set up to treat Covid-19," he said. After the order of the health minister, new ones were installed and now the number is 180.

"We hope these 10 days the morbidity curve will be reversed. We haven't reached the peak of November's second wave of the pandemic yet. But we monitor the situation every day", stressed Dr. Kolchakov.

According to him, the situation cannot be viewed at a moment's time. The pandemic has not yet passed and the results will be seen after its end.

"There is undoubtedly a direct link between coronavirus and mortality, if a nation tops the morbidity and mortality rankings for cardiovascular and oncological diseases. In November, we had a period when the mortality rate was twice as high vs. the same month of the previous year. Which indicates that coronavirus is not at all to be underestimated. From that point of view, we have to act responsibly. Now we pay the price of Christmas and New Year parties," the medic was adamant.
