The Academic Council of St. Cyril and Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo decided Monday to take away the doctor honoris causa title of Austrian Prof. Otto Kronsteiner`s of the Salzburg University with the argument that his views of the past few years have nothing in common with objective Slav and Bulgarian studies but service anti-scientific pragmatic interests. Prof. Kronsteiner`s recent publications are incompatible with the values fostered by the Bulgarian University whose patrons are Saints Cyril and Methodius, the authors of the Slav letters, reads the decision which was taken unanimously by the Academic Council. The leadership of the Veliko Turnovo University approved the proposal made by lecturers of Bulgarian Literature department, irrespective of the fact that in a letter to the rector, Prof. Kronsteiner says that he renounces the title. `It is not an honour for me to have a title that used to be given as a disciplinary measure during the Stalinist era,` wrote the Austrian professor.
In a series of publications he developed the idea that there is no future before Bulgarian and Slav studies because `only some 70 - 100 million Bulgarians, Russian, Macedonians, Serbs, Ukrainians and Belorussians use the cyrillic alphabet and these countries should adopt the Latin alphabet for the needs of the inter- European communication if they are to hope for membership in the EU`.
