In August Bulgaria reported its first outbreak of African swine fever, among backyard pigs in the northeastern village of Tutrakantsi, close to the border with Romania.
Due to high mortality rates, rapid and widespread in nature, and lack of treatment and vaccine, African swine fever in domestic and wild pigs is considered a very dangerous disease. Once infected, the infection caused large losses for national and international trade, pigs' livelihood and hunting, reported DUMA.
