Every year five Bulgarians who need a lung transplant will be operated in a clinic in Vienna, said Minister of Health Kiril Ananiev after a meeting with Prof. Walter Klepetko who leads the thoracic surgery clinic at the university hospital in Vienna, Focus News Agency reports.
They signed an agreement for the training of Bulgarian specialists in lung transplantation. Thus, from early 2021 lung transplants could be carried out in Bulgaria, the minister said. In the meantime, while the Bulgarian specialists are being trained doctors in Vienna will operate on five Bulgarian patients a year. The Bulgarian state will decide which patients will be sent there for transplant.
Prof. Walter Klepetko will also help the ministry in the preparation of its programme and campaign on organ donation.
