Bulgaria is at the forefront of pulmonary disease incidence. This was announced by Dr. Sofia Angelova, chairman of NADPB Association.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is now third in the cause of premature death along with car crashes. About 5-10% of the population is suffering from COPD, but only 75,000 are treated. And the cessation of COPD treatment immediately worsens the condition of the patients, said the specialist.
Smoking is one of the most important causes of lung disease, and in many countries - the most important cause of disability, suffering and premature death. This is the only reason for the deterioration of health, which is completely preventable.
Many of the parents who smoke at home have a lot of influence on children with asthma, Dr. Angelova said. One third of the sick children in Bulgaria have respiratory diseases.
Even in the context of treatment, smokers continue to smoke and so worsen their condition, and treatment becomes meaningless.
Besides COPD, acute infections of the lower respiratory tract, cancer and tuberculosis are the main diseases that lead to death. Ten people a day die from lung cancer, said Sofia Angelova.
In 1990, the incidence of tuberculosis increased because poverty made people eat bad food. That is why when experiencing a long cough, frequent infections, shortness of breath and chest humming you need to seek a pulmologist, in order to catch the illness in time, Angelova called.
A campaign starts on May 10th. You can make an appointment at 070010126 for an examination.
