Ukrainian Woman Detained in Sunny Beach After Attempted Bribery of Police Officers
Bulgarian authorities found themselves grappling with a peculiar case involving a 60-year-old Ukrainian woman
Nicolas Sarkozy, the former president of France, was taken into police custody on Tuesday morning in connection with a probe into the financing of his successful 2007 presidential run, according to a person close to the investigation.
Mr Sarkozy had previously faced allegations that his 2012 re-election campaign had received illegal funding, but it is the first time he has been summoned by judges in connection with the inquiry into financing of his earlier presidential election bid. The move to take him into custody was earlier reported by Le Monde and Reuters.
Custody can last for up to 48 hours, at the end of which a suspect can be placed under formal investigation — an indication that there is tangible evidence in a case, but one step short of being charged.
