Getting There: Rotunda of St. George in Sofia

Society | January 24, 2003, Friday // 00:00

The Rotunda of St. George in downtown Sofia has decorated the Bulgarian capital for more than one thousand and five hundred years.

The finest part of a monumental public building constructed in Roman times - the first half of the 4th century - was a round hall with a diameter of 9,5 m and a height of 14 m - and is the only one to have survived to this day despite later modifications. Research has shown that the building was constructed five times.

There are five strata of mural paintings dating from the 6th to the 16th century, but the most outstanding were those painted during the First and Second Bulgarian Kingdoms in the Middle Ages.
