An Austrian court has sentenced a Bulgarian national to five years in prison for people smuggling, The Associated Press reported on Wednesday.
The court in the city of Linz had found the 41-year-old Bulgarian man guilty of people smuggling after police discovered 20 migrants tightly packed in the back of his refrigeration truck when they stopped the vehicle in August 2015.
The name of the man was not released, the AP said.
Police officers had testified that they had found the 20 migrants from Syria, Iran and Afghanistan sharing a space of just seven square meters in the back of the truck. Poloce had stopped the truck only after a chase.
In a separate case, four Bulgarian nationals were arrested in Hungary last year over suspected involvement in the smuggling of 71 migrants, whose dead bodies were found in an abandoned truck in Austria at the end of August.
