Bulgarian Actress Maria Bakalova Set to Lead 37th European Film Awards Gala

Sofia International Film Festival, one of the most important film forums in Central and Eastern Europe, will have its 20th edition from March 10 to March 31.
Cinemagoers will have the opportunity to watch among 150 full-length action and documentary films and 50 short-length ones, many of which have received prestigious awards or have been nominated at the most famous international film festivals.
Six-times OSCAR nominee British-American romantic drama “Carol” by Todd Haynes is one of the big names included in this year’s list of films at Sofia Film Fest.
The official start of the Festival is on March 10 at the National Palace of Culture (NDK) with the premiere of the most recent movie of Bulgarian director Iglika Trifonova “The Prosecutor, the Defender, the Father and His Son.”
One of the biggest names in contemporary French jazz music, Erik Truffaz, will be a special guest of the Festival. The famous trumpeter with his unique style combining hip hop, rock and roll and dance music, will perform on March 13 at Sofia Live Club together with his colleague Siegfried Debrebant, who is well known to the Bulgarian public.
Another special guest at Sofia Film Fest will be Terry Gilliam, American-born British screenwriter, film director and actor who has directed popular movies such as “Brazil,” “12 Monkeys,” “The Fisher King.”
Gilliam will receive the Sofia Award for outstanding contribution to cinema, which is the Festival’s most prestigious award. Sofia International Film Festival is organised by Art Fest under the patronage of Sofia Municipality in cooperation with the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture, NDK, the National Film Center and the Bulgarian National Television (BNT), and with the support of MEDIA
programme of the European Union.
