Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said that an unmanned aircraft shot down by Turkish warplanes on Friday was made in Russia but didn’t belong to that country.
"The downed drone is Russian-made but Russia has told us in a friendly manner that it doesn't belong to them," Davutoglu said in an interview with Turkish broadcaster Ahaber on Monday, according to Reuters
Turkey’s General Staff announced on Friday that Turkish Air Force jets had shot down an unidentified drone in the country’s air space near the border with Syria.
The unmanned aircraft could have belonged to Syrian government forces, which receive weapons and military equipment from Russia, or the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD, or “other elements”, Davutoglu said.
PYD is a Syrian affiliate of Turkey’s Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Ankara regards the PKK as a terrorist organization.
