Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt called on Wednesday an early general election to take place on June 18.
It is expected that her centre-left coalition will face a formidable challenge from the opposition, the BBC reports.
The opposition centre-right bloc, which is led by former Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen, has been continuously leading in the opinion polls.
However it is likely that the opposition would need the support of the anti-immigrant Danish People's Party to pass legislation in parliament.
Following the announcement of the early elections, British Prime Minister David Cameron cancelled his visit to Copenhagen, which had been scheduled to take place on Thursday.
After declaring the date of the election, Thorning-Schmidt said that her government had succeeded in achieving economic recovery of the country.
She became the first female Prime Minister of Denmark in 2011, when the party under her leadership – the Social Democrats won and ended ten years of centre-right rule.
Thorning-Schmidt promised to raise welfare spending, while the Liberals of Rasmussen want limits on public sector growth.
Rasmussen welcomed the early election and said that his party would focus on creating jobs in the private sector.
The election had to be held before September 14, but Thorning-Schmidt deemed that the right time has come for holding it several months earlier.
