The opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) refused to head the parliamentary committee on constitutional amendments.
Earlier on Wednesday, the main ruling party GERB proposed to BSP to head the committee, which will be established after the constitutional amendments were tabled to parliament on Tuesday.
The constitutional amendments were supported by 132 MPs from the main ruling party GERB, its junior coalition partner the Reformist Bloc (RB) and one of the parties supporting the government – the Patriotic Front (PF).
The other party backing the government – Alternative for Bulgarian Revival (ABV) did not support the amendments, but eight MPs from the Bulgarian Democratic Centre (BDS) signed in favour.
Since BSP declared itself against the amendments, it would have been controversial for the party to head the committee.
The parliament will vote the membership of the committee, which will deal with the proposed constitutional amendments concerning the judicial reform, on Thursday.
GERB leader Boyko Borissov reacted to the fall of the Zhelyazkov government during a live broadcast on his official Facebook page, following the mass protests across the country.
