Nigel Farage will stay on at the helm of the UK Independence Party, party chairman Steve Crowther announced on Monday.
Crowther said in a statement the party’s National Executive Committee has refused to accept Farage's decision to quit after failing to win a seat in last week’s election because it “concluded that UKIP's general election campaign had been a great success.”
In addition the NEC recognised that the campaign for a referendum on the UK's membership of the EU "has already begun this week and we need our best team to fight that campaign led by Nigel."
"He has therefore been persuaded by the NEC to withdraw his resignation and remains leader of UKIP."
Eurosceptic UKIP won 13% of the vote, the third biggest share behind the Conservatives and the Labour Party.
