A big forest fire has started around the zone around the former Chernobyl nuclear power plant. A high state of emergency has been issued in Ukraine on account of the incident as reported by RT daily.
In the words of Ukraine's Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, the fire is moving towards the nuclear power plant. He further announced that the country's Prime Minister has called an emergency commission on the case.
Approximately 400 hectars of the forest were set on fire.
''Situation is under control, but this is the biggest fire since 1992. We haven't had such a big fire in a while,'' stated Ukraine's PM Arseniy Yatsenyuk to journalists at the Zhulyani airport following his visit to the site of the incident.
Meanwhile, Nikolay Chechetkin - deputy chair of the emergency situations unit in Ukraine, stated that the cause, could be either arson or reckless usage of fire in the dangerous zone.
According to officials, the fire is located 15-20 kilometers away from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, so there is no eminent danger for it to be set ablaze.
