The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office has submitted an indictment against former Deputy Parliament Speaker Hristo Biserov.
An inquiry into the Sofia City Court's system shows the act was tabled Thursday morning, according to a statement [BG] on the website of the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Bulgaria.
Biserov is being taken to court on three counts, including large-scale tax evasion, violation of the Currency Act's prescriptions on declaring currency deals, and withholding of truth in written declaration under the Publicity of the Property of Persons Occupying High State Positions Act.
He could be facing up to 17 years of imprisonment if found guilty on all three charges.
Earlier this week Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov said an indictment against Biserov, who had already been facing a probe over money laundering and document fraud, could make its way into court before the Orthodox Easter holidays.
Biserov and his stepson Ivaylo Glavinkov came under fire late in 2013 for alleged money laundering and tax evasion, with the former purportedly transferring vast amounts of money to a Swiss bank account and to one in a Macedonian financial entity.
Biserov, who had been until then a key member of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party and a Deputy Parliament Speaker in the previous (2013-2014) National Assembly, quitting both Parliament and the party.
