The restoration of the broken water supply tube near the local highway in the region of Kardzhali has been been continuing all night long.

The incident was caused by a landslide near the village of Padartsi in Southern Bulgaria, approximately 18 kilometers away from the main city.

The location of the damage is highly inaccessible, so the emergency teams had to walk 3 kilometers up a steep and slippery passage, the Bulgarian National Radio reported. Food, additional lights and electricity generators were provided for the rescue teams, working during the night. Fortunately, one of the damaged portions of the water pipes has been located and fixed.

According to local Governor Iliya Iliev no additional equipment or emergency groups will be needed. According to experts the broken water supply tubes will be restored by the end of the day.

Approximately 50,000 people in Kardzhali and the nearby villages have been cut out of fresh water supplies on account of the severe damage.

If more landslides occur in the region, there is an eminent danger for more severe damages to the water supply stream. Fixing further damages could last for more than a month.

Close to 2,000 liters of fresh water will be supplied to kindergartens and social institutions in the Kardzhali region.

Meanwhile, Director of the Road Infrastructure Agency, Lazar Lazarov stated Monday that the road connecting Asenovgrad and Smolyan could be restored tomorrow at the earliest.
