Roma Ethnic Group Grew Most in Bulgaria over Past Century

The Roma ethnic group marked the most significant growth in the past century, by 281,359 people, data from the 2001 census conducted by the National Statistical Institute, shows. As of March 2001, Roma in Bulgaria numbered 370,908 people. The largest percentage of people - 83.9% - identified themselves as Bulgarians. Second, but a lot smaller, comes the Turkish ethnic group with 746,664 people, or 9.4% of Bulgaria's population. The Turkish ethnic group increased 1.4 times compared to 1900. The final results of the census registered a decrease in population growth, putting Bulgaria's population at 7,928,673. Bulgaria's population currently stands at 7,891,095 people.
