Volcano Villarrica Erupts in Chile

The Villarrica volcano erupted early on Tuesday morning, with lava and ashes reaching as far as 1,000 m into the sky, the BBC reported.
According to information of the Chilean police, after the red danger code was issued in Chile, over 3,400 people have been evacuated from the nearby towns of Pucon and Conaripe.
The mayor of Pucon, Carlos Parra said that the activity of the volcano seemed to have stopped in a matter of 20 minutes.
''There's no ash, no lava flow, the volcano is totally passive at the moment,'' he added.
The 2,840 meter-high volcano itself is situated approximately 750 km southwards of the capital Santiago and last erupted in the year 2000. It is a popular tourist hiking destination in Latin America.
Approximately 100 people are believed to have died in eruptions caused by Villarrica in the 20th century.
