In a joined press conference between the German Chancellor and and the Swedish Prime Minister Stefan L?fven Wednesday, Angela Merkel stated that security in Europe needs to be built in alignment with Russia.

''This is a very important message to Russia,'' she added, as reported by RIA Novosti information agency. ''We want to build security in Europe with Russia and not against it. This is our condition.''

Merkel, however, stated that in case this is not possible, Europe will have to defend its principles. The ultimate goal is peace in the German Chancellor's words.

She further reminded that peace in Europe was maintained after the Second World War namely because countries learned to respect their borders.
