Delyan Dobrev, chairperson of the parliamentary Energy Committee, said that the liberalisation of the electricity market in Bulgaria should be completed in practice by the end of the year.
Dobrev explained that this will allow both businesses and individual customers to choose their supplier of electricity from among a list of 100 licensed companies.
The former Energy Minister in the first government of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov stated this in an interview for daily Standart on Friday.
The resulting competition will improve the services on offer, as everyone will be provided with the opportunity to change the electricity distribution companies (EDCs) with another supplier.
Dobrev admitted that according to the EU requirements this full-scale market liberalisation should have been established several years ago.
The MP added that the opportunities for extraction of natural gas in Bulgaria, which were presented at the International Petroleum (IP) Week in London, will also feature in a similar presentation in Houston in May.
