Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov will leave for Brussels on Wednesday night after a technical malfunction forced his plane to return to Sofia Airport in the evening, 24 Chasa daily reported.
According to the head of the government’s press office Sevdalina Arnaudova, the pilots discovered four minutes into the flight the left landing gear couldn’t retract.
The plane took off shortly after 7 pm Sofia time (1700 GMT).
After several unsuccessful attempts to retract the landing gear the pilots decided to return to Sofia Airport. To do that, the plane had to circle above Sofia for about an hour to spend as much of the jet fuel in the tanks as possible.
The aircraft touched down safely at the fifth approach to landing.
Another aircraft is being prepared to take Borisov to Brussels where he is to take part in Thursday’s European Council meeting, according to Arnaudova.
