Bulgarian customs officers have seized two kilograms of heroin at Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint at the border with Turkey.

The smuggler, who was arrested on 4 February, was part of a criminal group trafficking heroin from Turkey to Italy via Greece. A flooded road at Turkey’s border with Greece had forced the smuggler to cross into Bulgaria.

The seized drug with an estimated value of BGN 250,000 was attached to the body of a Bulgarian citizen arriving from Turkey in an Audi passenger car, the National Customs Agency said in a press release on 11 February.

The Bulgarian authorities found that aTurkish citizen residing in San Marino was among the organisers of the heroin trafficking route. He was detained by Bulgarian police in the city of Haskovo.

Criminal charges were brought against the two offenders. Their names were not disclosed.
