The environment ministry on Thursday warned of an expected rise in river levels as rain started to fall in many Bulgarian regions.

According to a forecast of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, a more considerable rainfall is expected in southern Bulgaria.

On Friday, rain is expected to fall almost everywhere in the country. Precipitation levels are forecast at 5 to 20 litres per square metre in southern Bulgaria and 1-10 litres/sq m in the northern regions.

River levels are expected to rise across the country, particularly in the area of Rila and Rhodope mountains where Maritsa, Arda and Mesta rivers are flowing.

Torrential rains and overflowing rivers have caused widespread damage in many Bulgarian regions since the start of the year.
