Bulgaria: Bulgaria Budget Miscalculated 'on Purpose' - President Plevneliev Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev was at the Borisova garden in Sofia to take part in the Read with Me initiative aimed at encouraging the interest in literature. Photo by BGNES

Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev called the gaps in the current state budget a product of "deliberate" mistakes.

"This makes [the budget's] update even more necessary, since the truth about numbers in the country was not spoken out in the beginning of the year, but they were erred intentionally," the President argued while attending on Sunday a Culture Ministry initiative promoting literature at a central park in Sofia.

Plevneliev made clear the acting caretaker government, which he appointed in August, was only committed to "telling the truth" about revenues.

He cited as an example the Interior Ministry Act, passed earlier this year during the tenure of former PM Plamen Oresharski.

"When the Interior Ministry Act was being drafted, higher wages and extra grants were promised to 50 000 employees. This costs BGN 160 M, and there is not a single lev [BGN] for it in the budget. Who is honest with the Bulgarian people?".

On Sunday the Ministry of Finance revealed details of the proposal it was preparing on how to overhaul 2014's State Budget of the Republic of Bulgaria Act.

The draft includes boosting the deficit to more than 4 percent and raising public debt to 28.4 percent of the gross domestic product.

An update was tabled in the last days of the socialist-liberal government that stepped down on July 23, but the Parliament then rejected the proposal.
