The abolition of roaming fees in the EU might be delayed, according to a draft EU proposal, quoted by EurActiv.
The elimination of the fees was supposed to happen by the end of 2015, as voted by a great majority in the European Parliament earlier this year.
From the draft document from Italy, which currently holds the EU presidency, it seems that instead of a full cancellation, the EU is planning to introduce gradual reduction, or a "glidepath" - gradual reduction in roaming fees towards the goal of "roam like at home" (RLAH).
This would mean that a person who has a UK sim card, will be able to use their cell phone while in other EU countries for the same price as if they were in the UK.
Charges for roaming have been repeatedly cut by the European Commission since 2007 – most recently this summer, when roaming call fees were cut by a quarter and mobile data fees were halved.
Industry sources, quoted by EurActiv say ending roaming charges is not in doubt, it is just the timing.
