Bulgarian lawmakers have rejected a motion that would have revoked the secrecy protecting credit files of politicians at Corporate Commercial Bank (KTB).

The bill was proposed by Yordan Tsonev, an MP from the liberal Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) who was also the Chair of the outgoing Parliament's Budget and Finance Committee.

Tsonev, alongside DPS leader Lyutvi Mestan, argued before the vote the idea was one serving "public interest", as lifting of the banking secret regarding politicians who hold their assets in KTB would have cast more light on the recent developments at the bank, which is now under the special supervision of Bulgaria's central financial institution BNB.

MPs took the step during the last session of  the 42nd National Assembly, which is to be dissolved later this week.
