Bulgaria: US Ambassador Concerned With South Stream Construction Bid Photo:

In an exclusive interview for, US ambassador to Bulgaria Marcie Ries said the US were concerned with the construction of the Bulgarian stretch of South Stream.

According to recent reports, the Bulgarian stretch of the pipeline will be built by the Russian Stroytransgaz consortium.

A major shareholder (63%) in Stroytransgaz is Volga Group, owned by Gennady Timchenko, who was placed on the US's sanctions list against Russia in mid-March. He is believed to be the 6th richest man in Russia, according to Forbes, and with close ties to President Vladimir Putin.

Was there a US reaction on the fact that for the construction of the South Stream pipeline in Bulgaria was chosen a company, partly owned by Gennady Timchenko, who is on the US sanctions list?

We are deeply concerned with the recent decision of Bulgaria to concede the construction of South Stream to Stroytransgaz. In response to the actions of Russia in Ukraine, the US included Stroytransgaz and its branches in the US sanctions list, published on April 28. Those sanctions forbid any business relations of US citizens with Stroytransgaz and the freeze the assets of this company in the US.

How would you comment this choice and could it have an effect on the bilateral relations?

This is not the right moment to work with Russia in the usual way. We advise the Bulgarian companies to avoid doing business with companies and people, sanctioned by the US. Companies or physical entities, who provide material support to Stroytransgaz can also be subjected to US sanctions, which are part of the wider efforts of the international community to hold Russia responsible for violating the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.

Have there been meetings between Bulgarian and American representatives at which the subject was discussed?

Bulgaria's government is familiar with our stance on this decision.

How would the US react, if partner countries, NATO members, do not conform to the US sanctions? How would this be interpreted?

It is important that the USA and the EU continue to work together and to clearly demonstrate to Russia, that its actions in Ukraine will continue to have consequences. Companies and persons who provide material support to Stroytransgaz could also be included in the US sanctions list.

Reading the last 2 lines of your statement you are threatening Bulgaria with sanctions if it works with the Russians to build the pipeline.

American diplomacy at work - do what we want you to do or else.

The problem is solved!
There will be no South stream, no Russian gas pipe. The fifth column of the Turkish Islamic republic in EU was activated and the DPS party withdrew from the governing coalition in Bulgaria. There will be a little bit of a chaos, new elections no government capable of perusing this project……and the new government will refute the contracts and obligations of the present government.
Personally I prefer it this way!!! Around gas pipes sometimes, nasty things happen, take for example Syria. So better not to stand in the way of a superpower straggling to concur and rule the entire world.
I only hope that when USA invades Russia, and takes control on the gas deposits it renews this project. Because the present diet of renewable energy, green energy, energy efficiency and energy diversification…… will not sustain any live around.
And I wish the European countries down the pipe understand us and forgive us for obstructing this project.
Of course, we cannot ask Germany for forgiveness. They will receive gas from the North Stream but consider feeding the South and the Central Europe complete waste of resource not worth the efforts of the EU administration. That is the German view of EU.

Miss ambassador honestly!!!! The compliance with the Russian demands and the building of this pipeline does not depend on us.
It depends on your most loyal and dear ally. The Islamic republic of Turkey. You did so much for them!! You helped them to incorporate its economy with the European economy. You helped building their military power and you helped them to protect their territorial integrity.
They should be happy to help you. Just call your American colleges in Ankara or Istanbul to call the right persons in Turkey to call the correct persons here in the Turkish DPS party in Bulgaria.
And that is all!!!!
No pipeline. They control our government they have the ministers and the chief experts in the ministries. Just peanuts. No need to blame us for lack of loyalty.
If they do not help you than you have a problem..
But I am Sure they will help.

For some economic relationships with Russia are obviously allowed!!!! but not for us!!

1. Rosneft and BP formed a 51% / 49% joint venture to explore in the Domanik shale formation in the Volga River Basin.
2. Lukoil and Total formed a 51% / 49% joint venture to explore the Bazhenov shale in Western Siberia.
3. Rosneft and ExxonMobil expanded their $400 billion exploration plan of the Russian Arctic with agreements on LNG export terminals and expanded exploration licenses.
4. Rosneft intends to build a 50% stake in Seadrill and contract all of North Atlantic Drilling's (NYSE: NADL ) fleet for a combined 35 rig years.
5. Gazprom signed the very first natural gas supply deal with Eni that will use spot prices rather than oil-indexed gas.

Balkans are our place we need to have economy here.. we need to live here.. it is our regional economic space.
