European Parliament President Martin Schulz and Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev discussed the upcoming EP elections at a meeting in Brussels.

Speaking at a joint briefing with Martin Schulz after their meeting, Plevneliev noted that it was important to exchange ideas and share concerns as regards the EP elections, adding that the EP had always shown understanding and support towards Bulgaria.

The two expressed hopes that the debates over the next two months would make it clear how Bulgaria could bring added value to the EU and make the most out of EU programs.

Plevneliev and Schulz expressed concerns that the EP elections, scheduled for May 25 in Bulgaria, would be treated as domestic elections and as an opportunity for confrontation between local political parties.

Bulgaria's head of state warned that such a scenario would result in neglecting the problems related to the EU agenda and a negative election campaign characterized by serious conflicts.

"We hope that the lack of dialogue between the main political parties will be dealt with. There are reforms which cannot wait and important decisions which must be taken as soon as possible. Political antagonism must give way to important statesmanlike decisions. Naturally, it is a part of democracy and it will always be there, but it is our mutual hope that the reform path will be given a boost and the EU agenda will have a significant impact in Bulgaria too," Plevneliev said, as cited by Darik radio.

Southeastern Europe's progress in the sphere of EU integration and the active role of Bulgaria in supporting the EU bids of western Balkan countries were also discussed during the meeting between Plevneliev and Schulz.

Plevneliev emphasized that Bulgaria called for preserving Southeastern Europe as a focal point for the 2014-2020 programming period, especially as regards regional connectivity, so as to support the economy.

Other topics on the agenda of the meeting included the current situation in Bulgaria, Bulgaria's role in the EU and the concrete contribution of the EU to implementing reforms in Bulgaria and the region.

Plevneliev is on a working visit to Brussels to take part in the 4th EU-Africa Summit starting April 2, 2014.
