Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the European Union would impose sanctions on Russia starting from Monday over its military intervention in Ukraine's Crimea region.

"When it comes to sanctions on Russia, a decision has in fact already been made, especially on the procedure of introducing sanctions. The consequence of this will be the start of sanctions on Monday," Tusk told a news conference on Tuesday, quoted by Reuters.

Meanwhile, the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Durao Barroso said the EU will offer to Ukraine trade preferences for EUR 500M each year.

The EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht added, that the trade agreement between the EU and Ukraine, which would ease the access of the Ukrainian goods to the Union's single market, could be signed by end of November.
