Bulgaria: Elder Dobri, Grigor Dimitrov Top “Personality in the News” 2013 The Elder Dobri

Dobri Dobrev, better known as Dyado Dobri (The Elder Dobri), has received the most votes in Novinite.com and Novinite.bg's annual "Personality in the News" poll.

In an age where business, politics, and sports dominate the news, Dyado Dobri's legacy comes to the surface and shows us that there is much room for charity and good deeds. The 3,881 votes he collected in the poll is an attestation for this.

The 99-year-old man walks 10 km each day from his home village of Baylovo to Sofia in order to beg for money, which he later donates to the church.

In the politicians' category, UNESCO's Secretary General, Irina Bokova, topped the vote with 2,188 votes, followed by ex-Prime Minister and current opposition leader Boyko Borisov, who received 2,035.

The current Prime Minister, Plamen Oresharski, who has been facing months of relentless anti-government protests, comes third with 1,406 votes.

Tennis star Grigor Dimitrov was unchallengeable in the sports category, winning with 2,408 votes. Heavyweight boxer Kubrat Pulev came second with 1,205, while retired footballer Stiliyan Petrov received 849.

Japan's ambassador to Bulgaria, Takashi Koizumi will receive the "Ambassador in the News" award, with 1,315 votes. Britain's envoy Jonathan Allen comes second with 1,026 votes, ahead of his German counterpart Matthias Hoepfner with 926.

In the business section, we have a rare tie for first place between Ekkehard Neureither, Country Manager for ABB in Bulgaria, and Ivaylo Penchev, founder and CEO of Walltopia, both with 966 votes. Orlin Popov, owner and general manager of Happy Bar & Grill and Happy Sushi, is third with 593 votes.

Renowned violinist Vesko Eschkenazy grabbed a landslide victory in the culture category with 1,759 votes.

The awards ceremony for "Personality in the News" will be held in March in Sofia.
