Saturday Yotova was commenting European Elections 2014 as a test for the embattled cabinet of Bulgarian PM Plamen Oresharski, supported by the Socialists and the liberal Movement for Rights and Freedoms.
Since soon after coming to power, the Oresharski cabinet has had to face significant street protests against alleged corruption and shady business influences.
Some Socialist and MRF functionaries have in the past commented that should the two parties fail to get a convincing result at the EU elections in May, a cabinet resignation might be in order.
But others have argued that the results at European polls should not be so closely linked to national politics.
“It is possible for the Bulgarian Socialist Party itself to request early elections, if our results at European elections is very convincing,” said Yotova for TV7 Saturday.
The S&D MEP further commented the decision of former Bulgarian president and BSP leader Georgi Parvanov to form a separate list for the European elections, describing the Parvanov’s ABV movement as motivated by a “spirit of divisiveness” that she said is bound to have a very weak influence on party supports.
