The European Commission monitoring report on Bulgaria serves as a helpful corrective for Bulgaria's Supreme Judicial Council.
The EC published Wednesday in Brussels its reports on Bulgaria and Romania under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM). Prevailing comments are that the one on Bulgaria is strongly critical.
"The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) appreciates EC recommendations for the establishment of a set of objective standards of review. We have created unified criteria for imposing disciplinary sanctions on magistrates, we are working on establishing clearer consultation procedures with the Civic Council, we are currently preparing a report on its activities,"said SJC representative Sonya Naydenova at a briefing following the EC report presentation.
"We consider the introduction of a centralized random case assignment system to be of great significance. Such important system is to be established. SJC has initiated a comprehensive inter-institutional approach by which to improve the review of criminal proceedings," said Naydenova.
The Supreme Judicial Council takes into consideration all criticism. The Council's program for 2014 is to be adopted and it will be synchronized with the latest EC report, Naydenova assured.
