Arctic temperatures have gripped parts of the United States and Canada as a result of a polar vortex.

The winter storm has already taken 16 lives, while more than 3,700 flights were cancelled over the weekend, the BBC reports.

In Chicago, schools will remain closed, and the mayor has advised people to stay indoors, as temperatures may plummet to as low as -50 Celsius.

The states of Ohio, Illinois, and South Dakota are among the most severely affected. Meanwhile, the storm is expected to move towards the northeast in the coming days.

In Canada, temperatures dropped to -29 in Toronto and -38 in Quebec City, the lowest seen in at least two decades.

The deadly cold weather is to last at least until the middle of the week.
