A total of 21 nations have qualified so far for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Brazil next year.
Nine European teams - Spain, Holland, England, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Bosnia, Russia and Belgium – have qualified directly after winning their qualifying groups.
Eight European runner-ups are now playoff contenders - Croatia, Sweden, Romania, Iceland, Portugal, Greece, Ukraine and France. Four of them will advance to the World Cup. The draw for the two-legged ties will take place October 21 in Zurich. The seeded sides are Croatia, Portugal, Greece and Ukraine, with France, Sweden, Romania and Iceland set to be the unseeded four sides.
Three teams from North and Central America have qualified directly: Costa Rica, the United States and Honduras. Playoff contender Mexico is to face Oceania winner New Zealand in a home and away series, with the winner advancing to the World Cup.
South American teams Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador have qualified, while playoff contenders: Uruguay will play Asian side Jordan in two legs.
Asian teams Japan, Australia, South Korea and Iran have also qualified.
Brazil have qualified as hosts of the tournament.
No counties have qualified from Africa so far, as the second legs of the playoffs are yet to be played. Ghana lead Egypt 6-1 after the first leg, Burkina Faso lead Algeria 3-2, Ivory Coast lead Senegal 3-1, Nigeria lead Ethiopia 2-1, and Tunisia and Cameroon are level at 0-0.
