The European Citizen Action Service announced its board of directors has appointed Bulgarian Assya Kavrakova as its new head.

Kavrakova take over from Tony Venables at the beginning of next year.

Assya Kavrakova comes to ECAS with considerable experience of the non-profit sector, European affairs and a wide range of contacts,“ ECAS said in statement.

It points out that even ten years after the enlargement to Central and Eastern Europe and more recently Romania and Bulgaria, from where Assya Kavrakova comes, it is still rare for someone from a new member State to be appointed to head-up one of the main European associations.

The new director will have to cope with a few major challenges, including populist antagonism to migration with some member states even calling in question the EU’s most highly rated achievement-the right to move freely anywhere in Europe, ECAS said in its statement.
