Roma people from Bulgaria’s Black Sea city of Varna are selling for cash at the local flea market the digital TV decoders they received for free.
The Roma obtained the devices as social welfare provision in order to be able to watch public TV digital broadcasts after the analogue signal switch-off on September 30th.
Roma ask for a price of BGN 20 to BGN 25 per device, according to the public television, BNT.
At the same time, many Roma homes living in Varna's Maksuda neighborhood are equipped with satellite dishes.
When receiving vouchers for free decoders, recipients must sign a disclaimer that they aren't subscribers to any cable, or satellite TV operator. The authorities, however, seldom verify the accuracy of these documents.
3000 Varna citizens are entitled to receive free digital TV decoders.
Vouchers for free decoders will be distributed until October 30, and they will be valid until the end of November.
