Today marks the joyous celebration of Easter, one of the most significant holidays in the Orthodox Christian calendar.
The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee (BHC), an independent NGO for human rights protection, demands more information from the media in regards to the recent dismissal of two Bulgarian commentators.
BHC also seeks DW' support to Bulgaria in the country's efforts to improve the levels of press freedom.
On September 20th , DW - Germany's international broadcaster, has published a statement in regards of its decision to part ways with Bedrov and Baruh.
The media argues that both journalists had “deviated from the ethical standarts of DW in journalism” and “published a few objectionable materials”, therefore the broadcaster had to let them go.
“BHK is highly embarrassed by the release of the two correspondents” and “would like to be informed in more details about the editor’s reasons to cease work with them”, writes BHK in its letter, addressed to Verica Spasovska, Head of Central Southeast Europe, DW.
The human rights organization “would like to know which the objectionable materials are. What have been found in them which deviate from the ethical standarts in journalism ?”
Also, BHK seeks the support of “the leaders of the esteemed German media throughout the present difficult time for our democracy, in which independent media are important factor.”
A few days ago, Ivan Bedrov had issued a statement at his personal website to share his personal view on the matter: “My weekly comments for DW were an opportunity for me to share with the readers a non-biased and more critical journalistic point of view, it was never about the money”, explained Bedrov in his opinion published at his personal website on September 22nd.
In the statement Bedrov also thanked all his supporters for the unexpected solidarity regarding his departure from DW.
