European Union Foreign Ministers will debate Wednesday economic measures aimed at forcing Egypt's army-backed rulers to end a crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood.

The emergency meeting in Brussels will be closely monitored by all sides in Egypt, as the EU has emerged as a key mediator in the conflict, Sky News reminds.

EU's 28 member states are expected to express concern over the bloodshed in Egypt and undertake limited changes in the EUR 5 B aid package promised the north African country in 2012.

EU's top foreign policy official, Catherine Ashton, has offered to go to Egypt to help mediate a political solution to the crisis in the country.

"I told the Egyptian foreign minister at the weekend that I am more than willing to go back to Egypt, if they wish me to come back," she said ahead of the extraordinary meeting in Brussels, according to the BBC.

Violence in Egypt has left more than 900 dead in the last week.
