Quest for Peace: Hamas Contemplates Truce Amid Ceasefire Talks
Efforts persist to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, with the latter considering a proposed 40-day truce from Israel.
Bulgarian nationalist party Ataka has asked Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov to probe Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova for failing to fulfill her duties concerning the preservation of public order amid the ongoing anti-government protests.
Ataka submitted a tip-off Tuesday concerning "systemic breaches of Bulgarian laws" by Fandakova.
The nationalists argue that the rallies are illegal because they contradict provisions of the Gatherings, Meetings and Manifestations Act.
Ataka argues that Bulgarian society is "witness to and hostage to a group of Bulgarian citizens who are exercising their constitutional right to protest," adding that the rallies do not meet the requirements stipulated in Bulgarian laws, and the Gatherings, Meetings and Manifestations Act in particular.
"For a 40th day in a row, the law has been brutally breached, while the Mayor of the capital is failing to take the steps she is required to take under the abovementioned law," Ataka states.
The nationalist party insists that the protesters do not observe the requirement to not hold rallies in the period 10 pm and 6 am and to submit written notification to the Mayor about the purpose, organizers, time, and place of the rallies 48 hours in advance.
Ataka insists that the "unregulated and illegal roadblocks" in downtown Sofia create serious problems for Sofianites and endanger road safety.
"The law clearly states that the Mayor must take the necessary steps to secure road safety, which Fanadakova has systematically and deliberately failed to do," the party argues.
The nationalists ask Tsatsarov to intervene by initiating a probe into the violations committed by the Sofia Mayor.
Tuesday is the 40th day of anti-government protests in Bulgaria.
Public discontent spiked in response to the appointment of notorious media mogul Delyan Peevski as Chair of the State Agency for National Security (DANS), but the protesters were not appeased by the subsequent cancellation of the decision and went on to demand the resignation of the socialist-led cabinet of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski over ties with oligarchs, as well as Election Code amendments aimed at guaranteeing greater civic participation in government.
