Residents of the southwestern city of Blagoevgrad staged a new protest Wednesday morning against the appointment of Musa Palev from the ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedom (DPS) as District Governor.
Around 70 protesters, who had gathered in front of the District Governor's office, demanded the resignation of Musa Palev and Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski.
As early as 7 am on Wednesday, the protesters started gathering in front of the building, waiting for Palev to arrive at his workplace.
Just like yesterday, however, Palev failed to appear.
At around 9:30 am, rumors started circulating that Palev had withdrawn from the post.
The allegations about Palev's resignation, as well as the news that the appointment of notorious media tycoon and DPS MP Delyan Peevski as Chair of the State Agency for National Security (DANS) had been cancelled, triggered chants of "Victory!" and "Down with DPS!"
Right after Palev rejected claims that he had resigned in a phone conversation, the protesters declared over a megaphone that they also opposed the nomination of Yulian Goshev from the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) for the post of District Governor.
The announcement was followed by chants of "Resign!" and "Red Thrash!"
Meanwhile, the tent camp of Blagoevgrad residents opposed to Palev's appointment remains in place, and a petition for his removal from the post is still underway in Blagoevgrad and the other towns in the district.
