Bulgaria's leading political parties inked Thursday a public contract for conducting free, fair, and democratic general elections.
The contract was signed by Former Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov for the center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB; by another former Interior Minister, Mihail Mikov, for the left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP; Chetin Kazak for the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS; Ekaterina Mihaylova for the right-wing Democrats for Strong Bulgaria, DSB; Emil Kabaivanov, leader to the right-wing Union of Democratic Forces, UDF, and Yanko Grozev for right-wing Bulgaria for Citizens of former EU Commissioner, Meglena Kuneva.
The contract was signed by a number of smaller parties as well, such as the Bulgarian Agrarian Union, the Bulgarian Social Democratic Party, and the conservative Order, Law and Justice Party of Yane Yanev.
Volen Siderov and representatives of his far-right, nationalist Ataka party did not attend.
The goal of the contract is to guarantee the election of a legitimate Parliament to work in the interest of Bulgarian citizens.
Ivaylo Frantz, representative of one of the movements or protesting Bulgarians, refused to sign the document on grounds fair elections were impossible as there was a full political monopoly in the country.
"People, stop dealing with illusions, the citizens are continuing their protests," he said in demonstratively leaving the hall.
The GERB government of Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, resigned on February 21st, amidst mass rallies, and President, Rosen Plevneliev, had to appoint a caretaker one. Bulgarians will vote in snap general elections on May 12.
