Embattled Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad has called on the BRICS countries to invest efforts and end the civil war that has dragged for 2 years now.

Assad's message was sent via an envoy who travelled to South Africa and handed a letter from Assad to South African counterpart Jacob Zuma.

According to the Syrian president, an intervention by the BRICS countries could put an end to violence and provoke the start of dialogue.

Representatives of the 5 countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - are set ot meet March 26 in South Africa.

Meanwhile, the passing week has seen the UK and France issuing calls for an end to the arms embargo on Syria, arguing that the opposition needs support.
