Code yellow over dangerously low temperatures has been declared in western, northwestern and northern Bulgarian, the National Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) announced Saturday morning.
Code yellow has been declared for 12 regions – Pernik, Kyustendil, Sofia, Sofia City, Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Pleven, Lovech, Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo, and Targovishte.
Code yellow means potentially dangerous weather, where the forecast is not for unusual meteorological events, but requires people to exercise caution.
The minimum temperatures will be between minus 5C and minus 10C; minus 15C-16C in the regions under code yellow. In the capital Sofia, the mercury fell in the morning to the minus 11C degrees mark.
In the afternoon, the mercury will climb anywhere from minus 2C to minus 3C
Roads are being cleaned but icy and treacherous conditions are possible at many locations.
Four temperature records were registered Saturday morning by Bulgaria's national weather service, as a cold wave gripped the country – the coldest spot was the town of Kazanlak with minus 14.8C, followed by the western city of Kyustendil with minus 14.6C, the northern city of Montana – minus 12C, and the Danube town of Svishtov – minus 11C.
