The Bulgarian Customs have discovered a total of sixteen very rare US and Mexican coins hidden in the ceiling of a train traveling from Bulgaria to Serbia.
The bust happened on the Bulgarian side, at the Kalotina cross border checkpoint between the two countries, the Bulgarian Customs Agency reported Thursday.
The coins are made from white metal, most likely silver, with different nominal value. They are described as extremely intricate and well preserved with most of them dating from 1800.
The numismatic treasure has been hidden in a manufacturer-made cavity in the ceiling of the train's hallway. The coins have been divided into two binders wrapped in a black plastic bag.
Two hunting knives were also hidden inside the bag, while Customs officials discovered in another ceiling cavity of the same train an air rifle barrel. The investigation in the case continues.
