Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has called upon Muslims to wage a holy war against the US and Israel over a film deemed insulting to Muslims.
Ayman al-Zawahiri has praised as "honest and zealous" the demonstrators who breached the US embassy in Cairo and the attackers who stormed the US consulate in Benghazi last month in violence related to the amateur film "Innocence of Muslims."
A short web video derived from "The Innocence of Muslims" movie defaming the Prophet Mohammed sparked violent riots in several Arab countries and other states with Muslim populations in September after it was posted on YouTube. In Libya, armed militants ransacked the US consulate in Bhengazi in an apparently planned attack amid protests of the video, killing the USambassador to the country, J. Christopher Stevens.
In an audio message released by al-Qaida's media arm As-Sahab and posted on militant websites on Saturday, al-Zawahiri claimed Washington had allowed the film's production under the pretext of freedom of expression, "but this freedom did not prevent them from torturing Muslim prisoners".
