Bulgaria: EU Postpones Deadline for Bulgarian Cities' NO2 Limit Values File photo of Bulgaria's capital Sofia

The European Commission has agreed to postpone the deadline for attaining the limit values for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in two Bulgarian air quality zones.

The decision concerns the air quality zones surrounding the capital Sofia and the country's second largest city, Plovdiv.

The Bulgarian Environment Ministry said on Tuesday it had been informed of this decision of September 5.

The Sofia and Plovdiv municipalities have thus avoided paying sanctions for the excessive NO2 levels registered in 2010. They will be allowed to exceed the NO2 limit values by 50%.

However, they will have to comply with European Commission regulations by the end of 2013.
