US Ambassador to Bulgaria James Warlick has been bestowed with the highest order of the country, Stara Planina first degree, as he is about to depart the country.

Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev awarded Warlick with the prestigious order over his contribution to the development of the diplomatic ties between the two countries.

"As a first love, Bulgaria will always remain in my heart," the outgoing Ambassador said on Monday, as quoted by local media.

Warlick compared the Bulgarian-American relations to a tapestry, as he sees them as beautiful but complex and time-consuming.

He said he was sure that the tapestry would be richer and more beautiful the next time he visits the country.

Warlick will depart from Bulgaria on September 14 to return to Washington, D. C. where he will immediately serve as Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, a senior policy position in the office of the Secretary of State.

The arrival date of new Ambassador, Marcie Ries, is unknown.
