French PM Jean-Marc Ayrault has stated that France will propose the convention of a speciaal European Council to discuss and solve issues with Roma people in the EU.

"We want this question to be considered and solved on the EU level and in the next days we will request for such a meeting," stated Ayrault.

French Junior Minister for European Affairs Bernard Cazeneuve will on his part propose starting direct talks with the governments of Bulgaria and Romania, from where many Roma go to France.

"There is no point in hiding our faces in the sand," stated the French PM and said his country will pursue its policy of solving the issue with illegal Roma camps.

Wednesday the French cabinet had a special sitting dedicated to the problems, weeks after the government resumed the controversial policy of evicting Roma to their home countries.

This was a policy started by former French President, rightist Nicolas Sarkozy, but has continued in the rule of new French President, socialist Francois Hollande.
